Introduction

A battery has a certain amount of charging cycles. After each charge cycle, the ability for the battery to hold onto charge decreases slightly, eventually leading to a dead battery.

If the battery is swollen or deformed, discontinue the use of the computer until you can install a new one. A swollen battery is not a safety issue according to HP.

The laptop should be shutdown and unplugged before you start the steps.
