              Turning off the computer and disconnecting all devices

I recently noticed that my laptop was not charging and lost battery life quickly. I also noticed that there was a bulge in my case, creating cracks near the keys. This problem shows that there is gas buildup in the battery, and has multiple causes. In this case, I think it is due to overheating.
We must begin with turning off your computer through the operating system, and then disconnecting the charger. HP recommends this by removing the cord from the outlet, and then unplugging the cord from the cable. Disconnect all external devices (mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc.)

              Removal of the service door

Remove the screws on either side of the panel. There are 8 clips to release in total, 4 on each side. I used the pick from the iFixit tool kit, inserting it straight down into the seams.

              Removing the bottom case

There are 6 rubber screw covers to remove. If you have trouble removing them, I used a thin, sharp tool (tiny screwdriver) and pushed it into the edge of the cover and dug it out. You might damage the cover, but the function will essentially be the same.
There are a total of eleven screws you need to remove. HP has helpfully grouped them by screw type into three groups, (1), (2), (3). I used the regular iFixit kit, and found that the screw driver was too short to reach one of the screws in group 2. To fix this, I had to widen the hole slightly so it could reach.

Step 5

              (Optional) Catch up on cleaning!

Now that you have the base enclosure off, you can take the opportunity to clean out your laptop! I have three years’ worth of dust buildup on mine, and it was very satisfying to clean. I took a can of compressed air and used short bursts to clear out dust, and isopropyl alcohol to remove stubborn dirt.

              Disconnecting the battery cable

Here I have highlighted the battery, and the cable you need to disconnect (Don’t be distracted by the dusty fan, I took this picture before cleaning my laptop).

Step 7

              Remove the speaker and its cable

As illustrated in (1), disconnect the speaker connector.
Remove the two screws in (2).
Detach the speaker cable from the battery in (3) and lift it out.

Step 8

              Remove and replace your battery

Now that the speaker and battery are disconnected, you can remove the battery and replace it with your new one.
To reassemble, follow the directions in reverse. Good luck!
