Introduction
In this guide, I am going to show how to open the laptop cover and replace the RAM modules. Most other components can be replaced in a similar way (but please note that CPU is AFAIK soldered to the motherboard and cannot be replaced easily, if at all).
BIOS shows the laptop model as “17-by0xxx”. The manufacturer’s manual describes models with either 15” and 17” screen - there is a single manual for some models of 15” and 17” laptops, including this one. It is not straightforward, however, to determine names of laptop models that are built in the same way (the manual does not contain a list of models it is for).
I have disassembled the laptop several months ago and am writing this guide from my own memory and notes and photos I have made back then.
Update: there is an official service manual on HP website, right in the “User manuals” section (it is necessary to set the language to English to see it). This guide was written almost completely before I found this service manual.
What you need
Step 1
Remove DVD drive
- place the laptop upside down
- remove the screw pointed to by the red arrow
- slide the DVD drive out

Step 2
Screws from the bottom of the laptop
- remove the rubber foot at the back of the laptop (red arrows)
- remove 4 screws hidden under it
- 4 screws from the bottom of the laptop are different then the rest. These were probably the screws below the rubber foot at the back.
- lift the edges of the rubber foot at the front of the laptop and remove two screws hidden under it (blue circles)
- remove other screws from the bottom of the laptop, including two inside the DVD bay (yellow circles)

Step 3
Remove bottom cover
- turn the laptop around (upside up) and open the lid (so that it is positioned as if you would be normally using it)
- use a flat plastic instrument to gently remove the bottom cover
- I did not have a flat plastic instrument, so I used a metal screwdriver, which unfortunately left some small marks on the cover (red arrow)
- I did not take photos of this step, so the image is for illustrative purposes only
- take special care around the DVD bay (I have unintentionally broken two small latches there)

Step 4
Bottom cover removed
- close the lid and turn the laptop upside down again

Step 5
RAM module replacement
- replace the RAM modules in the usual way:
- press the module holders outside (in the direction of the red arrows)
- the RAM module should pop free and form an angle (like 30°) from the mainboard,
- remove the module,
- insert a new module into the slot under an angle (around 30°) to the mainboard,
- then press this module towards the mainboard and it should snap into place
- There are two RAM slots on the mainboard. If only one RAM module is to be used, it is probably essential that it be placed in a particular slot or the laptop would not boot otherwise.
- From what I can remember, under one slot there is an inscription similar to “one module only”. I have bought a laptop with one RAM module and it was placed into this slot with the inscription.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
