Introduction

There are four Zerk fittings that should be greased regularly: one fitting on each hub (grease every 30 hours of use), the spindle (grease every six hours of use), and the chain roller (grease every six hours of use).

You’ll need a grease gun with at least a ten inch hose to reach the Zerk fitting on the spindle.

Position the trencher on a flat surface and turn the engine and power off before starting any work.

What you need

Step 1

              Engage the hub lock pins
  • Make sure that both ignition switches are turned to the off position. There is one on the engine and one on the control panel.
  • Pull the ring near one of the wheel hubs straight out, away from the wheel.
  • Rotate it so that the small roll pin lines up with its slot.
  • Release the ring so that the lock pin slides into the wheel. You may need to rotate the wheels a little before the lock pin fully engages.
  • With the pin engaged, it should be very hard to turn the wheels.
  • Repeat this step so that the lock pins on both wheels are engaged.

Step 2

              Connect the grease gun
  • Clean any dirt or debris off of the Zerk fitting before applying grease.
  • Slide the grease gun nozzle straight onto the Zerk fitting on the left side of the chain roller assembly.
  • Push the nozzle until you feel the nozzle snap into place on the fitting.
  • Depending on how big your grease gun nozzle is, the nut around the fitting might stop the nozzle from fully snapping into place. In this case, hold the nozzle in place while you use the grease gun.

Step 3

              Grease the chain roller assembly
  • With the nozzle securely attached to the Zerk fitting, pump the grease gun to grease the assembly.
  • Continue pumping until you start to see excess grease come out of the Zerk fitting.
  • Remove the nozzle and wipe away any excess grease.

Step 4

              Grease the axle
  • Clean any dirt or debris off of the two Zerk fittings on either end of the axle.
  • Attach the grease gun to one of the axle Zerk fittings and repeat steps two and three to grease the axle.
  • Repeat with the Zerk fitting on the other end of the axle.
