Introduction

So long as the rivet pin isn’t broken or bent, the carabiner gate should be able to be fixed using this guide.

Disclaimer: Carabiners used for safety measures - firefighting, climbing, etc. - should not be used after a failure such as broken gate. Even after a carabiner is repaired, it should not be used for any purpose that can potentially put a person in danger. Carabiners used for safety should be replaced if broken in any way, though if utilized for personal use, fixing it is an easy solution.

  • Position the carabiner so that the gate is pushed forward past the nose and the latch is hanging out.

  • Position the pliers between the rivet pin.
  • The rivet pin is a flat rectangle metal piece poking out of the hinges.

  • Gently but firmly squeeze the rivet pin behind the hinge.

  • Push the gate back, so that it is behind the nose.
  • Be sure to push the gate slowly and carefully, to avoid unnecessary jerking around, which could potentially break the carabiner further.

  • Position the gate back to the original position behind the nose.

  • The gate should now snap back into position securely. If it does not, repeat the process.
  • Be sure that the rivet pin was not bent or broken in the act of guiding the gate back to its original position.
