The following steps describe how to enable or disable the computer’s internal, not external, modem speaker. Some computers have the capability of emitting the sound through the computer speakers. For those computers, the steps below may not enable or disable this, as other software may be involved.

Windows 95 and above users

To adjust the modem speaker, follow the steps below:

There are some computer modems that do not contain a speaker and therefore will not emit sound if enabled or disabled. Additionally, the modem speaker may become defective, and therefore is not able to emit sound.

  • Open the Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Modems icon.
  • Highlight the modem that you want to adjust the volume and click the Properties button.
  • This window provides an interface for adjusting the volume. Moving the volume slider to the left reduces the volume, and moving it to the right increases the volume.

DOS and Windows 3.x users

DOS and Windows 3.x users must enable or disable the modem speaker with the AT commands.

Below is the AT command to set the speaker volume to low and then turn it off once connected.

ATM1L1

If you want to turn off the speaker, you would use either of the following commands.

ATM0L1

M0

The AT commands above can be typed at an MS-DOS prompt, or through the terminal or dialing program.

Not all modems support the commands above.
